About the used electric vehicle loan

Thinking about a used electric car and living in Scotland? We offer an interest-free loan for individuals, repayable over up to six years. The used electric vehicle loan is funded by Transport Scotland and can help you purchase used electric vehicles with set maximum loan amounts:  

  • electric mopeds costing £5,000 or less are eligible for up to £5,000 
  • electric motorcycles costing £5,000 or less are eligible for up to £5,000 
  • electric cars costing £23,000 or less are eligible for up to £23,000 
  • electric vans costing £23,000 or less are eligible for up to £23,000 

Our cost caps include VAT. 

Check if you’re eligible

You can apply for loan funding if: 

  • Your total gross household income doesn’t exceed £50,000 per annum (before any deductions). Please see our full eligibility criteria below for important information on household income, how a household is defined and what supporting evidence is needed.

  • You live in a rural and remote area or island of Scotland. Use the postcode checker below to check if your address is eligible.

Dealership eligibility

Whichever used vehicle you choose to purchase with the loan, it must be purchased from an acceptable dealership. The dealership must be either:

Some things you’ll need at the time of applying:  

  • Your address history – we’ll need at least six years of address history. 
  • Your affordability information – we’ll need to ensure you can afford the monthly repayments for the duration of the loan term. 
  • Confirmation that you will not purchase the used vehicle before receiving a loan offer. If you do, we won’t be able to accept your application. 
  • If you’re applying based on household income, we’ll need evidence of this.  You can use either a payslip or pension payment as long as it’s dated within the last three months. 
  • If your household has more than one source of income, we’ll also need consent and income details from any additional contributors. 

Any document uploaded in support of an application which isn’t required for assessing the application, will be deleted from the system.

What happens after you apply?

Here is a quick outline of your application journey: 

  • You submit your application. 
  • We’ll aim to respond within 10 working days. We might request further information if needed. 
  • If accepted, you will receive a loan offer and must accept it within 14 days. 
  • You source your vehicle from an eligible dealership during the loan offer period.
  • You’ll then submit all claim documents. Any missing information will be queried, which might delay you receiving payment. 
  • We’ll aim to process your claim documents within 15 working days 
  • You’ll then receive your funding within 3-5 working days.
